2/3/26 Board Meeting Recap

Did you miss the Board meeting? Don't want to watch hours of the recording?

Below is a recap of the February 3, 2026 Special Meeting of the Board.

OVERVIEW OF ITEMS AND ACTIONS (OR INACTIONS) FROM THE FEBRUARY 3 BOARD MEETING

  • Agenda Item 3, Consent Agenda Item 3A, Personnel Report 26-02

    • Two of the trustees asked for an update on the posting of a Chief Financial Officer.  Superintendent Alvarado indicated that the district is advertising this position on a variety of websites and job search services.  He anticipates that the district should be ready to hold interviews sometime in March or April 2026.

    • It is also important to note that Marcy Guthrie, the principal at Gardnerville Elementary, is resigning at the end of June 2026.

  • Agenda Item 4, Board Policy 552 — Intra-District Open Enrollment and Transportation Assistance (2nd Reading) (For Discussion Only)

    • This policy passed unanimously, 6-0.

  • Agenda Item 6, Appointment of Appraiser NRS 393.240 (For Discussion and Possible Action)

    • The board approved on a unanimous vote, 6-0, to direct Superintendent Alvarado to select an appraiser to provide appraisals for the two parcels where the district office building is located.  Once the appraisals are completed, Superintendent Alvarado will present them to the school board for decisions about the possible sale of these parcels.

  • Agenda Item 8, Consolidation Scenarios (For Discussion and Possible Action)

    • After much discussion and an opportunity for the public to provide input through public comment on the question of consolidation of two or more schools for the 2026-2027 school year, the school board voted unanimously, 6-0, to inform families and staff at C.C. Meneley and Scarselli Elementary Schools that the district will move K-5 students from Meneley to Scarselli.  At a future school board meeting, the trustees will finalize this process by officially approving the consolidation of these two schools.

    • During the trustees’ discussion, they asked Superintendent Alvarado if consolidating just one pair of elementary schools would be a sufficient cost savings to reach a zero deficit by June 2027.  Mr. Alvarado indicated that just one consolidation should provide the needed cost savings within the plan the school district is putting together.  The trustees also discussed that current attendance zones for each school will need to be reviewed and adjusted in order to balance the enrollment of all elementary schools in the valley.  Additionally, the board indicated that if the district continues to decline in student enrollment, the board will have to consider additional consolidations in the future.

  • IMPORTANT: The next meeting of the Committee on Local Governance Finance through the Nevada Department of Taxation is Wednesday, February 25, 2026.  We will send out the Zoom information for this meeting and agenda when they are posted.

Thank you again for staying engaged and working together to address and solve the school district budget challenges.
